Network Switch – The Basics
Executive Summary about Network Switch-The Basics by Byron Mackelroy
A brief overview of network switches
A network switch is a type of computer networking hardware that bridges network segments. The switch plays an important component in most local area networks (LAN), including mid-to-large enterprise networks which utilize several linked managed switches.
Types of network switches
Managed Switches: Managed Switches provide optional configuration options and allow for a great variety of functionality.
Smart Switches: Smart switches differ from fully managed switches in that they only allow a specific set of modifications and functionality.
Enterprise Managed Switches: Enterprise switches are the more configurable and expensive version of managed switches.
The Role of a Network Switch
Executive Summary about The Role of a Network Switch by Derek Rogers
Every computer that is on the network can connect with every other computer.
More than just computers can be networked to a switch as well. Switches will allow packets to be broadcast so that the switch ports can figure out data and sort it accordingly. Some switches will operate between these different layers of interface and these are called multilayer switches. Some switches that are used for commercial uses make it possible to connect and switch between different networks; some of these switches can hand change between Ethernet, fibre channel and ATM.

Computer Networking – Definitions and Basics
Executive Summary about Computer Networking – Definitions and Basics by Youssef Edward
Suppose two persons that have data stored on some media, say hard drives. Every person who wants to transfer the data to his friend can easily transfer it through the network.
The wireless device will send the data in air by electromagnetic waves. It will be electrical pulses if the data are transmitted on cables.
In fact networks can be used not only to share data but also to share devices such as printers and CD-ROM. Mainly the network will be composed of a set of computers and a printer. The computer that has the more data storage and the higher processing power will be called the server. The internet is build over this scheme where the home computers are the clients and the computers that serve them are called servers.
Computer Networking
Executive Summary about Computer Networking by Bushra Bashir
Computer networking is a process of sharing data and shared resources between two or more connected computers. There are two main types of the computer network client-server and peer to peer. A network topology defines the structure, design or layout of a network. The star topology is most commonly used network topology.
1. Application layer
2. Presentation layer
3. Network layer
4. Data Link layer
Computer Network can be divided into Local Area Network, Personal Area Network, Campus Area Network, Wireless Local Area Network,Metropolitan Area Network and Wide Area Network.
There are several network connection methods like HomePNA, Power line communication, Ethernet and Wifi connection method.A network can also be categorized into several different types based on the services it provides like Server farms, Storage area networks, Value control networks, Value-Added networks,SOHO network, Wireless network and Jungle networks.
